- 소아들을 몇 10년 동안 진료 하다보면 수유모들이 병원 신생아실, 산후 회복 입원실, 소아청소년과 병실 여기저기서 수유모들이 수유하는 아름다운 장면을 흔히 접한다.
- 그러나 미국에서 40여 년을 사는 동안 젖먹이는 엄마가 사람들이 많이 있는 공공장소에서 유방을 다 내놓고 젖 먹는 아기에게 젖을 먹이는 모유수유 장면을 본적이 없다.
- 그런데 몇 년 전 조국 한국을 방문했을 때는 달리는 버스 안에서 한 수유모가 유방을 사람들 앞에서 내놓고 아기에게 젖을 먹이는 모유수유장면을 보았다.
- 젖 먹이는 엄마와 젖 먹는 아기의 모습이 너무도 자연스럽고 아름다웠다. “내가 배고프고 젖 먹고 싶어 우는데 나의 어마가 나에게 젖을 먹이는데 무엇이 잘못이냐”
- 미 플로리다 주 및 다른 몇 주에서는 최근 공공장소에서 수유모가 아기에게 젖을 먹여도 된다는 법을 게정했다.
- 우스운 이야기다.
- 대부분의 수유모는 남들 앞에서 모유를 수유하는 것을 부끄럽게 생각하고 수유하기를 꺼려한다.
- 그러나 곰곰이 따지고 보면 젖을 먹이는 엄마가 사랑하는 자기 아기에게 젖을 주는 것은 부끄러운 일도 아니고, 이상한 일도 아니며, 법에 어긋나는 일도 아니다.
- 오히려 아주 자연스런 일이며 아름다운 엄마의 사랑을 젖먹는 아기에게 흠뻑 주는 일이라 할 수 있다.
- 미국에서는 모유를 수유 하는 엄마들의 70%가 모유수유를 하는 동시 각종 사회활동에 참여하고 있다.
- 일반인들도 사회활동에 참여하면서 젖을 먹이는 수유모들을 긍정적으로 받아들인다.
- 요즘은 학교, 직장, 도서관 등 공공장소에 모유를 편안히 수유할 수 있는 모유수유 실이 마련되어 있다. 한국 송파 도서관에도 모유수유 실이 마련되어 있는 것을 보았다
- 이렇게 할 수 있게 법으로 정해져 있다.
- 맥도날드 등 음식점은 영유아들에게 기저귀를 갈아 채울 수 있는 기저귀 시설대도 설치해 놓았다. 법적으로 모유수유 실, 모유 짜기 실도 설치하게 되어 있다. 퍽 다행스런 일이다.
- 많은 사람들 앞에서 아기에게 모유를 부득이 먹여야 할 때는 수유용 브라의 앞자락만 열고 엄마의 젖을 아기에게 좀 더 편안하게 먹일 수 있다.
- 수유모 자신이 사람들 앞에서 수유하기가 부끄럽고 어색하다면 보자기 등으로 젖 먹는 아기와 유방을 가리고 아기에게 젖을 먹일 수 있다.
- 수유모가 사람들의 앞에서 도저히 젖을 먹일 자신이 없으면 미리 준비한 보충용 인공영양을 젖병으로 먹이거나 외출을 하기 전에 짜서 담은 모유를 젖병으로 먹여도 된다.
- 공공 장소 모유수유용 텐트를 고안하면 어떨까.

After treating children for several decades, it is common to see beautiful scenes where nursing mothers breastfeed in hospital neonatal rooms, postpartum recovery hospitalization rooms, pediatric clinics, and hospital rooms.
However, while living in the United States for more than 40 years, I have never seen a breastfeeding scene where a nursing mother lays out her breasts and feeds a breastfeeding baby in a crowded public place.
However, a few years ago, when I visited Korea, my motherland, I saw a breastfeeding scene in a running bus where a nursing mother put her breasts in front of people and breastfed her baby.
The breastfeeding mother and the breastfeeding baby were so natural and beautiful. Her baby said, “I’m hungry and I’m crying, and then my mother is feeding me. What’s wrong?” In the US state of Florida and several other states, a law was recently enacted that nursing mothers may breastfeed their babies in public places.
That’s funny. Most nursing mothers are ashamed of breastfeeding in front of others and are reluctant to breastfeed.
However, it is not shameful, strange, or contrary to the law for her to nurse her beloved baby when it comes to contemplation.
Rather, it is very natural, and it can be said to soak up the love of her beautiful mother to the suckling baby.
In the United States, 70% of mothers are breastfeeding and participate in various social activities.
The general public also positively accepts nursing mothers who are nursing while participating in social activities.
These days, there are breastfeeding rooms where you can comfortably breastfeed in public places such as schools, workplaces, and libraries. I saw that the Songpa Library in Korea also has a breastfeeding room.
It is established by law to do this. Restaurants such as McDonald’s have also installed diaper facilities to change diapers for infants and toddlers. Legally, a breastfeeding room and a milking room are also required.
That’s very fortunate. When breastfeeding is inevitable in front of many people, only the front of the breastfeeding bra is opened, and the mother’s breast can be fed to the baby more comfortably. If the nursing mother herself is embarrassed and awkward to breastfeed in front of people, she can breastfeed her baby by covering her breasts and breastfeeding with a cloth.
If she is not confident that the nursing mother can breastfeed in front of the crowd, she can feed a pre-prepared supplementary artificial nutrient with a bottle or bottle with squeezed breast milk before going out. How about designing a tent for breastfeeding in public places?
